Law enforcement officials throughout Ventura County have reported an increase in DUI arrests this holiday season compared to the same period last year. According to arrest data, local agencies arrested 140 motorists on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or drugs between December 13 and December 22. During the same time-period in 2012, only 91 DUI arrests were made.
The spike in DUI arrests comes during an increased enforcement period. As the holidays statistically result in high rates of alcohol-related accidents, injuries, and fatalities, officers throughout Ventura County – as well as the entire country – have increased DUI patrols and anti-DUI efforts such as checkpoints. The DUI task force and patrols are part of a region-wide 20-day campaign that will extend through the holidays and New Year. Funding for increased patrols was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
More DUI arrests should make it clear to local residents that officers are on high alert for impaired drivers. Officials report that saturation patrols and DUI checkpoints will be conducted in:
- Port Hueneme
- Thousand Oaks
- Simi Valley
Officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will also enforce its maximum DUI enforcement period on Christmas Eve and Christmas day. Official statistics will be reported through New Years' weekend.
